I haven't read all the comments so maybe it's already been mentioned, but if you're interested in NK life and brainwashing, read 'Nothing to Envy' by Barbara Demick. She follows the stories of 6 NK individuals who woke up to the truth about the propaganda and fled. So moving and it is helping my husband wake up.

BBC Documentary on North Korea - "Its like being inside a doomsday cult"
by cofty inbbc panorama has just broadcast an undercover documentary on north korea.
john sweeney - who previously went postal on scientologist tommy davis - joined a group from the london school of economics to secretly film inside the country.. the film showed hospitals with no patients, farms with no fields or animals and factories with modern looking equipment sitting idle.
the electricity works sporadically.

Governing Body Hates Higher Education Because It Destroys Their Delusion
by frankiespeakin inin an effort to keep their delusion alive it is only natural for them hate something that lifts the vails of their delusion and lay it barren.
their hate is transfered to the faithful rank and file and manifested in their forbidding it to the young who will surely see the ignorance of their delusion.
narcissistic delusions of divine appointment are resisted at the expense of the young.. they hate higher education to the same extent they hate psychiatry because both tread on their delusion and identify it in clear terms..

I moved to a small regional city to work once I finished my degree and people in the congregation looked at me like I wax possessed. It wasn't so bad when I lived in a bigger city; some JWs actually thought it was pretty cool that I studied, but most were intimidated by it. I'm glad I did what I thought was right and not the wt.
One thing the gb bangs on about which they claim is bad about uni is bad associations and drunken parties and debauchery. I must say in 5 years at uni I never saw anything like that, but did hear about it. But guess what- parties and drunkenness occurs not just among uni students...but some JWs think uni is like those 'American Pie' type movies. JWs would lecture me on the evils of uni life and then I'd say, 'oh what did you study at uni?' And the answer the uni bashers gave was, 'I have never been...'

Cuz you haven't mastered doublethink, or 'reality control'. George Orwell hit the nail right on the head, unbellyfeeling oldthinker!

How to give to Jehovah
by Satanus inback in the good old days, when god actually spoke to his great warriors, generally stuff they gave to their god was offered up as burnt offerings.
they burned thousands of cattle, goats, sheep, lots of cities and even a few people.
back then, jay hoover got off on the smells of bbqing meat and just generally burning stuff.

As Bono once said, "The god I believe in isn't short of cash." I echo that sentiment.

What is it with happified? An old bro in my old cong used to use it all the time in his talks and I'd snicker to myself at how much he sounded like a dope. I thought it was just something he'd come up with while dementia was creeping round the edges of his brain. Seeing it here on this board - is it commonly used in the congregations you others have been to? Is it regional?
Sorry for going off-topic. The spiritual heritage wt left me with one big, fat comment in my mind "How can we appreciate our spiritual heritage if we're not allowed to research it? If our spiritual heritage is so great, why can't you access WTs from before 1950, or the ground-breaking works of JFR through official channels? Smells like 'cult' to me."

I found that most born-in JW guys were shallow and stupid so it was difficult for me to find a husband. The guys in the 'world' on the other hand, were deep and had no illusions about relationships (read: the balding, 30+ JW born in who's never had a girl friend but expects some day that he'll marry an 18 yo hot blonde pioneer sister with big boobs) like the JW boys do. It was hard to not get attached to the 'worldly' ones. I married the next best thing: a recent convert who'd been out in the world for his first 36 years and so had a realistic and appreciative view of women.
@Black Sheep: is that picture from some old JW kids' book? It's friggin scary and I'm not a kid!!! That would scar kids for life, reading that at the age of 5.

Research Our Spiritual Heritage Only From OUR VIDEOS
by jw07 insince last week jws have been presented with study material which slyly revises the history of the watchtower organization through omission and twisting of history.
among the tactics is clever wording to draw parallels between jw practices today and supposed true servants of god in the past in order to justify current policy.
for instance presenting as fact that there was a defined governing body operating in ancient times.. pa1: "during a milestone governing body meeting in jerusalem in 49 c.e., the disciple james said: symeon [peter] has related thoroughly how god for the first time turned his attention to the nations to take out of them a people for his name.".

That and, it's part of human nature to want to cuddle up to some belief from time to time. Also, people lack good critical thinking skills. Which gets back to the issue of education: the less, the better for a JW. And if they do need education, it's suggested they do something vocational such as a trade. You are not exposed to critical thinking skills in a trade because you don't need them to do your job. Schools however, are encouraging more and more critical thinking, at least in my country. They are encouraged to study history and learn to interpret it themselves. This is something an old hide-bound JW will never do, and not something your average Joe will be good at, but at least the C2C curriculum changes in Australia will help kids grow up to be able to detect bs better.

International in an Asian country in 2009. I'd injured my back not long before the trip, and the seats in the poor country's stadium were horrendous and made my back worse so I spent most of the convention flat on my back, dozing on the bench in first aid.
The local Asians were great though- so nice to meet them.

Seriously, Oubliette? I guess they got out of it somehow, or Jackson would have been picked up at immigration. Unless he travels under a false name...
Can anyone tell us what his talk was about? I could ask a JW friend from the hall, but I'm not going to get an analytical answer.
